What To Do When You Plateaux

By definition, a ‘plateaux’ is a state we reach of little or no change after a period of activity or progress. In reality, it looks like the scales not budging even though we’re still working out and still depriving ourselves of our favourite carbs. It is the feeling that something is holding you back and you are stuck in limbo state and doing the same thing you’ve been doing for a while, although it has gotten you this far, it seems that this is as far as it will get you. 

Nothing makes us more unhappy than a perceived lack of progress. We are beings who are at their happiest when we are making progress in any and all areas of our lives.

So if we are doing what we are meant to be doing to make those changes, why have we hit a plateaux wall? 

Although it hit me in a brutal way, the answer is quite simple: we need to seek help.

The best of our capabilities have gotten us this far. From this point, we’ve got to figure out who not how

What this means is we need to seek out those whose work and study is realising the goal we are shooting for. 

When I looked at my body in the mirror, I realised I was no closer to getting my six pack than I was 6 months ago when I started training solo. I had achieved this goal four years ago and had foolishly assumed that I could replicate the results by doing what I used to do. Logic and easy enough, right? Turns out, no.

I decided to join a core class at my gym to see how they did things differently. Within the first minute, I knew what I had been doing wrong.

Working out on my own, particularly for a long period of time, has made me inconsistent in the way I was pushing myself. One day I would push but then the next 5 days I would be in ‘good enough’ mode. 

Me, myself and I are extremely competitive, but if I am competing with myself, myself needs to up her game a notch or ten to understand what it is that we are shooting for. 

Just because we have ingrained high aspirations and standards we cannot assume that our capabilities alone will get us there. One 20 minute class taught me that my body is not what it was a year ago let alone 4 years ago. It taught me that a whole new level of blood and sweat was required to get to the new level of progress I wanted to get to and if I wasn’t prepared to get that help, then I would be stuck in that same level. I would live in plateaux. 

I can’t imagine anything worse.

Moreover, when we allow ourselves to live in a plateaux state for too long, limiting beliefs and false narratives start to seep in. We start telling ourselves that this is the best we can do and that we aren’t capable of producing any more due to X, Y and Z.

Research has shown that we only ever exert enough effort to produce 40% of our true capabilities. This means that 60% of our potential is still left untouched. Working with someone who is trained to see the 60% that we are unable to see means that we can transform ourselves in ways beyond our imagination. 

How many times have you heard people whom have achieved the highest possible heights say: “I never knew I could get this far.” Behind every high achiever is someone who pushed them beyond the limits they put for themselves. 

My advice is, whatever it is that you want to up your game at, take the following steps: 

  1. Be prepared to admit that you alone cannot do this. Pride will get you nowhere. Humble pride will take you everywhere.
  2. As: Who is the best person for me who could get me to where I want to be?
  3. Ask them, sign up with them, do whatever it takes and follow their instructions. They are your guide for this new stage in your journey.  
  4. Always remember: you could always make more money. What you could never make is more time.
